Hospital Pharmacy Operations Report 2014, Lean Management & Automation are Top Strategies for over 600 U.S. Hospitals

Kit Check today released the results of a survey of hospital pharmacy directors representing over 600 U.S. Hospitals and published in Hospital Pharmacy Operations Report 2014. The publication represents the first comprehensive report focused on the status of hospital pharmacy operations. Key findings include categorization of new requirements that are putting strain on hospital pharmacy work capacity at a time of constrained budgets. These challenges range from managing drug shortages to compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In response many pharmacy leaders are implementing lean management principles and automation technology at a rate higher than previously understood.

LMP-chart“The message for hospital pharmacy directors is to get ready for more work with the same amount of budget,” commented Kit Check CEO Kevin MacDonald. He added, “Operating requirements for hospital pharmacies continue to expand faster than operating budgets. In response, a surprising number of hospital pharmacies are adopting lean management principles and automation technology to increase efficiency. The findings shed light on topics ranging from the top challenges facing pharmacies today to the best strategies for getting new initiatives funded. We expect it to be valuable resource for pharmacy directors looking for a fresh perspective.”

Kit Check Vice President, Doug Zurawski, Pharm.D. said, “Directors of Hospital Pharmacy are under tremendous pressure to meet new regulatory requirements, increase clinical support and maintain a high dispensing activity load with budgets that are flat or shrinking. In the profession, we all know this from our daily experiences. The Hospital Pharmacy Operations Report provides data that shows how these facts impact everyday pharmacy operations. It also illustrates the strategies pharmacy leadership employs to increase effectiveness and their departments’ reputations.”
