GS1 barcode support – auto capture lot and expiration date
You may have noticed the barcode looks a little different on some of the drugs you receive from the manufacturer. In preparation for some upcoming regulation changes, more manufacturers are making the switch to the GS1 DataBar standard.
The great advantage of this barcode format is that the lot and expiration date for the medication are included along with the NDC. To make things easier for Kit Check users, we wanted to start capturing this additional information when present. Users will no longer have to type in lot and expiration information which will also eliminate the occasional user data entry error around these two fields.
Before the end of the year, you’ll notice a slightly different (and better) user experience if you scan a GS1 Databar when attempting to create new items. Shortly thereafter we’ll add this to the item verification workflow as well (if you haven’t already opted for our streamlined item verification workflow we announced last month).
New dashboard experience
Get ready for the new Bluesight powered dashboard experience! Many of you have given us feedback that you want us to be more proactive in pointing out what work needs to be done so that your teams can be efficient and nothing slips through the cracks. After months of works, users with the Manager or Reporter role will soon see a change when the login to Kit Check. Instead of wasting all that screen real estate on shortcuts to inventory, reports, etc., you will now see a dashboard of interactive tiles powered by our prescriptive intelligence platform, Bluesight.
Each tile on the active kits tab focuses in on critical tasks that need to be completed (e.g. expired medications in kits). Click on the tile and it will flip over and provide more details to complete the task at hand or click through to the corresponding report which you can print out or further explore. On the ROI dashboard tab, you’ll have quick access to a visual representation of key statistics. Pharmacy managers can leverage that information to identify areas for improvement and standardize on best practices.
We will slowly be introducing this feature to users with the Manager or Reporter roles to get feedback before rolling this great new feature out to the technician and pharmacist roles. If you have any feedback, please let us know (firstname.lastname@example.org).
In-app support chat & a small update to the help documentation link
In the coming weeks, users will have a great new way to get help when they need it… chat support accessible right in the application. Any logged in user will be able to chat live with our great support staff if they have a question or a problem. We know you guys are busy and want to make it as easy and non-disruptive as possible to get help so that you can get back to work. This new support option won’t be available 24/7 at the beginning but the chat widget will clearly indicate when chat agents are online. When not available, users can still call (786-548-2432 ext 2) or email (email@example.com) support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We will also be making a small update to how users access the help documentation. We are getting rid of the question mark icon in favor of an actual “Help” menu option. A little less exciting than in-app chat but still aligned with the goal of making it easier to get help when you need it.
Are you a thought leader? Is cart management a pain for you or your team? We are currently investigating the idea of building out a full-fledged cart management solution and want to explore some of the problems hospitals face with the folks that know best… you. Here is a preview of some of the ideas we are investigating:
- Warning users if they attempt to assign the wrong type of kit to the wrong type of cart/drawer (e.g. adult tray in the pediatric drawer).
- Automatic tracking of cart location.
- Digital verification checklists (e.g. testing defibrillator, checking oxygen tanks, etc.).
- Mobile app for daily nursing unit checks and monthly pharmacy checks.
- Mobile app for assigning kits to carts and carts to locations.

With the impending onslaught of the end-of-year holidays, we decided to send the Kit Chat team home for vacation for the remaining two months of the year.
