CaroMont Regional Medical Center of Gastonia, NC Adopts Kit Check for Pharmacy Kit Processing Efficiency

Gastonia, NC — CaroMont Health, parent company of CaroMont Regional Medical Center (formerly Gaston Memorial Hospital), became the first hospital in North Carolina to adopt Kit Check™ (https://bluesight.com) for hospital pharmacy kit processing.

CaroMont LogoCaroMont Regional is a 435-bed, not-for-profit general and acute care facility. Kit Check™ provides cloud-based software that leverages RFID technology to reduce pharmacy kit replenishment from an average of 30 minutes to 3 minutes. CaroMont installed Kit Check™ in mid May and after 10 weeks of operation has already tagged and tracked more than 10,000 medications used in 206 emergency pharmacy kits.

“Using Kit Check has created tremendous efficiency in our pharmacy kit processing. We have cut kit replenishment time by more than 90%,” said Mike Molby, Director of Pharmacy Services for CaroMont. “By eliminating the manual process, Kit Check is enabling CaroMont pharmacists to spend more time on direct patient care. The pharmacy staff has appreciated the efficiency gains, easy-to-use software and responsive customer service.”

“CaroMont is an innovator in hospital pharmacy operations. As a growing acute care facility, it was important to replace a manual process that sometimes created a bottleneck in medication distribution. We are pleased that Kit Check could offer kit replenishment efficiency and greater medication visibility at the same time,” said Kevin MacDonald, CEO of Kit Check™.

About Hospital Pharmacy Kits

Pharmacy kits are staged throughout hospitals to provide physicians and nurses with rapid access to critical care medications. Examples at CaroMont Regional Medical Center include emergency kits, crash trays, eye kits and stroke kits. Each kit or tray is individually packed with up to 79 medications that CaroMont care providers may need to address specific or urgent medical situations. The kits are sealed to indicate the contents are correct. After use, the kits must return from a clinical unit to the pharmacy where staff replenishes consumed items.

Prior to implementing Kit Check, CaroMont’s pharmacy kit processing time ranged from 15 to 45 minutes. Now each kit can be accurately replenished in just 3 minutes and returned to the hospital care units.
