Embedded in each seal is a Kit Check RFID tag. Kit Check’s cloud-based software solution automatically reads the tags and associates them by serial number with the appropriate kit. This eliminates today’s practice of manually recording seal serial numbers for each kit and creates a detailed audit trail for State Board of Pharmacy and Joint Commission inspections.
“Kit Check has developed solutions and an ecosystem of partners to solve the daily problems and inefficiencies facing hospital pharmacy directors. Pharmacy kit seals represent another manual recording task that slows drug-dispensing processes and introduces the risk of human error. The seals are required by many hospitals and some states as a best practice for ensuring patient safety. Our announcement today with Health Care Logistics is an example of a partnership that provides additional value to pharmacists by automating manual pharmacy processes,” said Kit Check Co-founder and CEO Kevin MacDonald.
Kyle Sharpe, Executive Director of Sales from Health Care Logistics commented, “A growing number of our customers have told us they are using Kit Check software and they need one more piece of the process automated — the serialized kit seal. Health Care logistics provides serialized kit seals to hospitals throughout the United States today that manually record their association with kits. By partnering with Kit Check, we are offering our customers the first RFID enabled kit seal that automates tracking of the complete end-to-end process.”
About Hospital Pharmacy Kits
Pharmacy kits are used throughout hospitals for critical care procedures including operating room anesthesia, crash carts, pediatric emergency, labor and delivery, and many others. The kits contain up to 200 medications each. Kit Check’s solution eliminates a decades-old manual process of hospital pharmacy kit replenishment and expiration verification.
After a hospital pharmacy kit is used for patient care by medical staff, it is returned to the pharmacy so consumed medications may be replaced. Historically, a pharmacy technician would determine what items are missing and handle each individual medication manually to ensure it is not nearing expiration. After expiring items were removed and medications restocked, a pharmacist would then double-check the accuracy of kit contents. By adding RFID tags to medications, a Kit Check scanning station can count and validate each item automatically. Instead of 30 minutes of manual labor, RFID combined with Kit Check’s cloud-based software enables these processes to be completed in just 3 minutes, generating a 90% time savings. The RFID seal tags are now integrated into this process as well, providing a tamper-evident safeguard.
