Rising Costs in the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain

According to the NIH, “global healthcare expenditure is escalating at an unsustainable rate.” The growth is driven by a combination of primary drivers: an aging population, technological advances, and in large part, increased spending on medications. In recent years, total drug spend per hospital admission has grown by an average of 18.5%. From 2015-2017, this growth generated roughly $1.8 million in new spending for the average hospital. The rise in medication spend is expected to continue through the end of next year, with drug spend forecasted to grow another 4-7% on an invoice basis and 2-5% after off-invoice discounts and rebates. This white paper dissects the different trends affecting the rise in drug prices today.
