UNC Health Care: Standardizing Pharmacy Operations Through Shared Services Center

Each member of UNC Health Care managed and processed their own code trays for distribution across many areas of the facility. The pharmacists followed a manual process that was time-consuming, burdensome, and error-prone, and took time away from the clinical tasks the pharmacists were trained for.

Implementing a standardized process within a central distribution (hub-and-spoke) model required two primary project components. First, all participating hospitals needed to come to an agreement on standardizing disparate code trays, their contents, and quantities. Second, the central distribution framework needed to implement the processing and management of these trays, which meant creating workflow changes at both the Shared Services Center (hub) and each local hospital (spoke)—a process that included KitCheck™’s RFID medication management technology.
